What are the advantages of an MD/PhD versus only a PhD?

How does the MD contribute to a medical researcher’s long-term career?

Many medical researchers got MD degrees. Probably a lot of them simply start in Medical School and discover their passion for research. But others choose to get the MD so that they can acquire a practitioner’s frame of reference and understand the way in which research results are carried into practice. They undoubtedly also have more street cred with the MDs they work with in research, because they cannot be dismissed as “ivory tower”.

Many researchers also work on areas where they maintain a practice. For example, Michael deBakey, the famous inventor of several artificial heart implements, continued to do surgeries using the new materials he invented. Many other research-oriented physicians develop tools or devices or approaches to employ in their practices to stay on the cutting edge of the profession.

So much depends on the exact area of research you wish to pursue, and how close to practice its results will be.
