Online Education Enrollment Statistics
Social Welfare Statistics for 19th Century Britain?
I’ve been looking in vain for a source of statistics on Social Welfare in Britain, from about 1840-1913. I’ve found life expectency, infant mortality rate, and GDP/capita, but I’m struggling to find anything on Literacy and/or Education enrollment rates, or average height. I know the information exists, since we’ve talked about in various contexts, but I can’t seem to find a database that makes any of it available.
Has anyone seen this information online?
This is a good search engine (scholar Google) I just copied your question and got this

Business Cycles and Postsecondary School Enrollment. $115.71 Human capital theory suggests that the opportunity cost is lower during an economic recession which in turn encourages a person to enroll in a postsecondary educational institution. At the same time, the ability to pay the direct costs of education is reduced. The two effects work in an opposite direction. Using unemployment rates as a business cycle indicator this thesis examines the effect of unemployment on the enrollment and its components in postsecondary degreegranting institutions, Enrollment is subdivided by gender, institutional control, fulltime and parttime status, and firsttime freshmen and continuing student enrollment. The data are from the U.S. Department of Education, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) from 19482005. This thesis shows that there is a strong shortrun procyclical relationship between the change of the unemployment rate and postsecondary institution enrollment when using time series data. The relationship is highly significant and robust to different specifications. The control variables have their expected signs. The business cycle has higher impact on male than female enrollment, fulltime than parttime enrollment, public institution than private institution enrollment, continuing student than firsttime freshmen enrollment, and 2year institution than 4year institution firsttime freshmen enrollment. While the text preserves its basic techniques, there is expanded content on computer usage in relation to statistics, which will further enhance understanding and reflect the changes in the field. By gaining knowledge of the mathematical formulas used by software programs, students will learn to critically evaluate computer results and interpret data with greater confidence and ease. The extensive problem sets, complete with answers, come with key words to identify the content that students should carefully review. The new problem sets in this edition are designed to help students interact more fully with the content and thus more fully learn the concepts and techniques. In the early chapters, students receive a thorough introduction to measurement, statistics, and research; learn how to organize and display data; and calculate using percentiles. Students then move on to study measures of central tendency and variability, curves and sampling errors, and correlation’s and different types of regressions. Later they learn how to use t tests and how to analyze variance, comparing means and using repeated measures. Students also learn advanced statistical procedures and how to analyze non parametric data. This new edition is highly readable and well illustrated with figures explaining or demonstrating statistical concepts. By using Statistics in Kinesiology, Third Edition, students should gain a firm knowledge on the relevant statistical techniques used in physical activity fields, and professionals have a great reference at their fingertips.12/22/2004 copyri |
