The Efficacy of an Achievement Motivation Program. $115.71 With the influx of rigid state testing programs, all students are expected to achieve at higher levels as they progress through the school system. State testing in general is a major concern with diverse cultural groups. Counselorled developmental guidance units could perhaps have a positive impact on students attitude toward school, achievement, behaviors and state testing results. The purpose of this study was to examine whether an achievement motivation program with ninth grade students would affect achievement related thoughts and behaviors, locus of control, selfefficacy, intrinsic goal orientation, and extrinsic goal orientation. A sample of ninth grade students enrolled in a high school in south Texas participated in the study. The group participated in a ten week intervention program based on David McClellands concepts of achievement motivation. The research design consisted of an experimental and control group. Prepost assessments were administered to both groups. Instruments utilized included the Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican Americans (ARSMA); the NowickiStrictland Locus of Control Scale (NSLCS); and the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ). A mixed factor multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) with repeated measures was used in the study.
