How to Get a PhD in Education
While only a small percentage of teachers and academics strive to earn their PhD in educational philosophy, fewer still graduate with the honor. For some, the concept of the doctoral process is daunting, but as they say, anything worth doing is worth doing well. If your goal is to become a Doctor in the field of education, you must tackle a thesis and it must be defended in front of a panel of professors before you to can become one of their colleagues. Whether studying online for your degree or at a local university, the work remains difficult but rewarding.
To investigate certain programs, there are many steps. Speak with graduate students on Your Own and other institutions, they can help you to think about questions, and they probably know about other programs. It is very, very useful to visit the campus and the department and develop your own opinions. While you’re there, talk to teachers and staff of these programs. Discuss with students who are enrolled there. Visit classes and labs, if You Can.
If you are looking to explore the career path of becoming a PhD in education, there are several job options that often have excellent employment rates with comparably higher salaries to that of those applicants with only a Masters or Bachelors. Becoming a “Doctor” will lend you to the top of the resume pile when applying to be a public school principal. However, don’t expect such service when applying for the top position of superintendent.
Other administrator positions within education also offer higher salaries than other jobs but no by much. And one must take into account that these jobs are political in nature and therefore subject to turnover. On the other hand, a well established and respectable doctoral graduate could have a long and illustrious career as well. Many PhD’s make more of their income writing as published authors while employed by institutions such as colleges, universities or public school districts. There are several avenues including periodicals, newsletters, textbooks, journals and newspapers. Most of which fairly exclusively hire academics with advanced post graduate degrees.
The benefits of enriching students lives, being looked at as a mentor and having the authority and expertise to be a master teacher far outweigh the amount of work it takes to achieve such goals. Your studies will bring you down many personal journeys and tests which will guide you along your own view of philosophy. That type of self-awareness will well arm you to be at the forefront of educational reform as a thought leader and proponent of change. The degree, itself, will arm you to be a professor at a university or a leader in the public school setting. While both are quite rewarding, I believe that every PhD in the field of education needs to spend at least a modicum of time in the public school context to truly understand the social impacts of being a student in today’s school system.
The decision to participate in the graduate school and how to obtain a PhD in education is important, and not made lightly or without consideration. A typical doctoral program take 5-7 years during which you will have completed about one quarter of graduate school life. Many areas of the training are not done, students then spend 2-4 years in postdoctoral training before the start of their career. Commitment to a Ph.D. also means some sacrifice. Graduate students are generally not well paid. You can add a personal debt. In relation to your peers, you can give up years of earnings. In addition, you sacrifice yourself, because the doctoral education is the “job” that requires a lot of hard work and perseverance.
